Shelma Jun is Changing the Way Women Climb
thefrugalhiker.com

Shelma Jun grew up hiking, camping, snowboarding, and captaining her high school women’s varsity water polo team. But in doing so, she got pinned as a tomboy. She hated the term. Why was fun associated with being a boy? But the label stuck, and as a teen she found herself reinforcing the stereotype. “I felt like I had to put other women down,” she’s said. “‘They aren't like me. They’re so girly and emotional.’”

It was only years later, at age 34, that Jun realized the labeling was just society’s typecasting. She’d fallen into a trap. So she retooled her outlook, which eventually led her to start Flash Foxy, a women’s climbing community that hosts women’s-only climbing events and festivals across the country. She quickly became one of the strongest advocates for women climbers in the country—sowing acceptance and equality simply by being accepting and sparking real conversations about gender discrimination and sexism in the outdoors.

Pretty impressive, considering that Jun didn&..

The Land and Water Conservation Fund Is Dead
thefrugalhiker.com

The Land and Water Conservation Fund died quietly on Sunday night amid a news cycle dominated by the FBI’s inquiry into allegations of sexual misconduct by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and the staggering death toll from an earthquake in Indonesia. Created in the 1960s to direct revenues from offshore oil and gas development into a fund that would improve recreational opportunities for Americans, the LWCF is widely held up as the country’s single greatest tool for funding conservation. Throughout its lifetime, the LWCF has funded everything from playgrounds to battlefield monument preservation, fishing access sites, and easements across private land to provide access to public land. It had been in a febrile state since 2015, when House Natural Resources Chairman Rob Bishop, a Republican from Utah, allowed it to sunset at the end of its 50-year authorization. Congress eventually reached a deal for a three year temporary authorization, but the extension ended September 30.

Myth-Busting Weather Alerts Across the Country
thefrugalhiker.com

The true great American pastime is bad-mouthing people from different parts of the country. We love to denigrate others whose realities in some way seem inferior to ours—and at no time is this habit more pronounced than when we’re talking weather. Late-summer heat brings out the worst of our mockery. “Why do those Northerners need a heat advisory for temperatures cooler than our average high?” Southerners deride. Of course, it also happens in the winter. Citizens of Denver, Colorado, roll their eyes when a dusting of snow shuts down schools in New York City.

This is not because Northerners in general and New Yorkers in particular are wimps. There really is a massive difference between weather alerts depending on where they’re issued. Let me explain.

The National Weather Service sends out dozens of watches, advisories, and warnings to alert us of hazardous weather and help us make decisions to stay safe. The alerts range from the mundane (a fog advisory) to the most urgent (a tornado ..

Steens Mountain Backpacking Guide – Southeastern Oregon
thefrugalhiker.com

As you head toward the southeast corner of Oregon a panorama of raw wilderness stretches across the horizon, beckoning solitude seekers. The Steens Mountain monolith runs nearly 60 miles from northeast to southwest and 18 miles across, with its summit sitting at nearly 9,733 feet. What makes the Steens so special and worthy of the long drive are the massive and mesmerizing U-shaped gorges that run almost a half-mile deep on the western side of the Steens. On the east side, you're treated to views of a near vertical 5,500 foot drop to the expansive Alvord Desert, which offers 30 miles of alkaline playa.
The Steens Mountain Loop Road traverses the west side of the range for 52 miles through some of the best scenery in the region. It offers views of Fish Lake, The Kiger Gorge, the Steens Mountain Summit, and offers access to highland trails. Hiking options cover the gamut from high desert washes to subalpine meadows to plush green canyons. In this guide, we’ll help you plan your nex..
