Canada has officially been named the best travel destination for 2017 by Lonely Planet. The company’s Canada destination editor Alex Howard spoke about the decision.
“Canada is always popular with us. But there are several things going on in 2017 that made it number one. First, it’s the country’s biggest birthday party in recent memory with the sesquicentennial next year, and they won’t be shy about celebrating. Also, international travelers can expect their money to go further due to the weak Canadian dollar, so now is the time to start planning a trip.”
The guidebook chose Columbia as the second best travel spot, which they dubbed the “ultimate comeback kid.” Finland came in third, and other countries who got a mention included Myanmar, Oman, Dominica, and Mongolia. The United States did not get a mention this year.
As for top urban destinations of 2017, the guidebook chose the French city of Bordeaux thanks to the popularity of the Cité du Vin wine museum, as well a new high-speed rail link due in mid 2017. The rail line will connect Bordeaux to Paris in a two hour trip, which should increase the amount of visitors to the town.
